Avni Gupta, the second person I\u2019ve met over lunch on this mission, is a confident and inspirational university graduate who has a wealth of knowledge about the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She graduated with a Bachelors of Law and Commerce (Information Systems) from UNSW, and decided to pursue the path of law rather than that of finance. Today, she works at King & Wood Mallesons, one of the biggest corporate law firms in Sydney. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Avni is currently completing an 18-month graduate program at KWM, where she is able to work on three different teams for 6 months each. Currently, she works on a non-traditional mergers and acquisitions team, specialising in technology and intellectual property. This team is mainly focused on advisory law, rather than litigious or transactional law. Being able to experience different fields of law is fantastic for her growth as a solicitor, as it allows her to gain exposure in all three categories of law. She hopes to continue working in fields that have an ethical focus, such as employment law, in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few weeks ago, she reached the major career milestone of admission into the Supreme Court of New South Wales as a solicitor. Interestingly, this will not cause a great level of change in her role. Mainly, certain restrictions will loosen, such as not needing a licensed lawyer to proofread and certify her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Be proactive, and seek opportunities wherever they can be found. Avni doesn\u2019t feel that she was necessarily better than others in her cohort, rather, that being proactive facilitated how successful she is. This proclivity towards being proactive will serve her well, not just in law, but in life overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
